Senate majority leader succeeds in pursuit of railroad reviews.
The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) will begin conducting safety assessments for all Class I railroads. The assessments will be similar to the review of freight company Norfolk Southern that the National Transportation Safety Board recently conducted.
The FRA disclosed this decision in a June 1 letter written to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Senator Schumer’s office has been pursuing more widespread reviews of U.S. rail companies for the past few months, regularly exchanging letters with the FRA to encourage them in that direction.
FRA Administrator Amit Bose told Senator Schumer in this recent letter that, after they conduct the individual reviews of the railroads, the FRA plans to release “an overarching final report assessing issues, trends, and commonalities across all railroads reviewed.” Each major railroad will then be asked to “develop corrective actions in response to FRA’s recommendations, and FRA will track those to completion.”
Senator Schumer said the reports “will be a good first step to identifying the problems that persist in individual companies as well as what endemic problems permeate across the whole industry.”
